Eva's Satellite
For youth with substance use issues, the journey from chaos and crisis to stability often starts at Eva's Satellite.
Our programs continue to change as the needs of the youth change and we adapt ourselves to better meet their needs. In 2002, we forged new relationships and strengthened others with organizations and partners that will help us for years to come. For Satellite, a real milestone in our journey is coming closer Ñ construction of a larger, 24-hour purpose built facility is well underway. Completion and move-in is scheduled for January 2009.
In 2002, youth at Eva's Satellite identified a need for daytime programming. In response, we have restructured to accommodate new programs. The Thursday morning "Breakfast Club" provides an opportunity for youth to talk about any subject they wish and gives staff a chance to get feedback from the youth.
The Harm Reduction worker hosts workshops on a variety of topics, including the effects of drugs and alcohol, safe sex, relationships, family dynamics and alcohol, HIV and AIDS. Structured discussion also occurs at our Substance Abuse Awareness Program, which uses popular and documentary films to convey information and inspire conversation.
In addition to these daytime programs, we introduced a popular Sunday night recreation program for our youth at the Armour Heights Community Centre.
Over the years, we have seen a significant increase in the number of youth with mental health issues combined with substance use issues. These youth face a particularly hard journey to stability because there are not many agencies prepared to help them untangle and deal with all of their issues. A strong relationship between Eva's Satellite and New Outlook provides us with a mental health worker a few evenings a week. This partnership has allowed us to better assess our youth and provide them with useful referrals and more appropriate supports.
